Orban Describes EU, US Deal as One-Sided Win
The agreement, which concluded on Sunday after several months of intense discussions, has been described by Orban as highly disadvantageous to the EU.
“This was no agreement... Donald Trump ate Ursula von der Leyen for breakfast,” Orban declared during a podcast on Monday.
He compared the EU’s position unfavorably with that of the United Kingdom, stating that “The European agreement is worse than the UK one. Setting it up for success will be difficult later on.”
Last month, Washington imposed a 10% duty on British imports under its deal with London. In contrast, EU goods shipped to the US will be subject to 15% tariffs.
Meanwhile, American products entering EU markets will not be subject to any reciprocal duties.
Moreover, the deal includes a commitment from Brussels to inject an extra $600 billion into American industries, acquire $750 billion worth of US energy, and purchase “hundreds of billions of dollars” in American military equipment, according to Trump.
Von der Leyen stated that these investments will roll out over the next three years.
Orban expressed uncertainty regarding the financial and logistical feasibility of the EU’s promises.
He noted that the European Commission, led by von der Leyen, does not possess its own military forces or the funds necessary to acquire US energy and weapons.
“In whose name was the agreement made?” he questioned, casting doubt on the legitimacy and execution of the deal.
